Anodorhynchus leari
Parrots International provided donations to fund and establish The Lear’s Licuri Palm Project in Brazil, directed and coordinated by Kilma Manso, director of ECO. The Lear’s Macaw feeds almost exclusively (except occasionally on farmers’ corn) on the Licuri Palm nut (Syagrus coronata) and is completely dependent on the Licuri Palm for survival. If there are not sufficient Licuri Palms in the future, then we will lose the Lear’s Macaws in the wild.
In addition ECO began a research project on Reproductive Phenology of Licuri (Syagrus coronata). This may be an important step in future conservation efforts of the Lear’s Macaw.
