Amazona aestiva
Thanks to Ki lma Manso, Director of ECO in Bahia Brazi l, Parrots International was able to respond with donations to the confiscation of 517 Amazon parrot chicks from illegal traffic/smugglers in Pernambuco, Brazi l. The intercepted shipmentwas mostly Blue-fronted Amazon chicks (Amazona aestiva and Yellowfaced Amazon chick (Amazona xanthops The chicks were safely transported to Recife, Brazil with Kilma Manso, a Parrots International col laborator, as the project director of the efforts to rescue and rehabi litate. Kilma dedicated her days to providing food, medicine, and care for the chicks. Ki lma is "wi ldlife traffic" officer with IBAMA (the Brazi lian equivalent of the Fish and Wildlife Department Mark Hagen, of Hagen Inc. immediately responded with a donation of 500 lbs of Hagen Tropican Hand Feeding formula.
A team of volunteers trained by Ki lma hand fed over 500 chicks on regular intervals 24 hours a day.... a truly amazing undertaking. Kilma trained the volunteers in the proper nutrition and hand feeding technique. The team is monitored the health of each chick. Parrots International provided funding to cover the costs of shipping, the costs of additional hand feeding formul a, hand feeding equipment, and rehabilitation and release training… all to provide the chicks their chance to fly and fulfill their lives in the wild. The baby parrots will stay in Recife (Ibama and a farm) for around 2 months more and after will be transferred (by groups) to the Cemafauna/Univasf big aviary. The large Cemafauna aviary, provides enough space to fly as well as access to the Caatinga vegetation and to the main predators found in the wild.
