Busuanga Island, Palawan, Philippines
<\/span>Prioniturus platenae<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Under the partnership of Dr. Manny Reyes, Kingfisher Park,\u00a0Parrot International, Katala Foundation, Calamianes Expeditions & Ecotours, and the University of the Philippines Los Ba\u00f1os (UPLB) created a project in the Philippines to conserve the Blue-headed Racquet-tail parrot,\u00a0Prioniturus platenae<\/i>, local name \u201cKilit,\u201d an IUCN listed vulnerable parrot with less than 9,999 left in the world. \u00a0Kilit is endemic to the Philippines and only present in the province of\u00a0Palawan. The Kilit is still seen in Busuanga, an island with an area of 87,500 ha. \u00a0However, due to several factors (increase in population; rapid expansion of tourism; the Kilit considered an agricultural pest; Kilit habitat loss) poaching and killing has continued.\u00a0 Immediate action needs to be done to protect the Kilit or it faces extinction in Busuanga.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"UPLB graduate student (Realubut) conducted a preliminary Kilit survey at Kingfisher Park located in Busuanga Island.\u00a0 She recommended a conservation management planthat has been adopted for Busuanga Island.\u00a0\u00a0 To conserve the \u201cKilit,\u201d the project is promoting partnerships with the municipality of Coron, tourism businesses, Philippine government agencies, universities, K-12 schools and local communities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Project has proposed a resolution for Coron to designate Kilit the municipal bird. The community action theme of the Project is \u201cRegalo ng Kilit\u201d (Gift of the Kilit).\u00a0 The first \u201cGift of the Kilit\u201d was \u201cRegalo ng Kilit\u201d notebooks distributed to elementary, middle and high school students in the island, the second \u201cGift of the Kilit\u201d was \u2018Regalo ng Kilit\u201d polo-shirts for teachers, and the third \u201cRegalo ng Kilit\u201d basketball tournaments.\u00a0 (Basketball is a very popular sport in the Philippines).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
